Pizzicata Brought Its Best Seat Indoors as Carefree's Season Begins

  • October 29, 2026

"Before, it was more casual and the winning point was the patio because we have a beautiful patio in the courtyard," Federico Venturini told The Foothills Focus after his restaurant reopened. "Now we can also offer a more intimate and romantic space inside with little lamps and low lights."

That change matters to Sunrise, the Desert Mountain village closest to the front gate. Pizzicata is one of the easiest dinners to reach off the mountain, and for most of its first seven years its courtyard was the best seat. Now the dining room inside is a destination too. The timing works well. Carefree's November and December calendar is mostly daytime events that gather in and around the Carefree Desert Gardens. The patio still suits a long lunch. The indoor room is new, and it is where an evening can end.

What Four Weeks Changed

Pizzicata sits in Carefree's Historic Spanish Village. It closed for a four-week renovation and reopened Oct. 12. The work touched almost every part of the restaurant:

  • Custom porcelain tables imported from Italy
  • New booth seating, textured walls and updated flooring
  • An expanded black-and-gold bar
  • An enlarged kitchen
  • Improved outdoor dining areas in the courtyard

The Foothills Focus reported that the redesigned interior adds soft lighting and decorative touches that suit the restaurant's Italian identity. Venturini compared the four weeks to building a new restaurant. Flooring, painting, electrical and outdoor crews all had to be scheduled into one short closure.

The kitchen kept its recipes. The paper reports that the remodel preserved "the authentic Italian recipes that helped establish its reputation," and Venturini described what came out of it as "a kind of new restaurant with the same food and the same vibes." The VIP grand reopening was held Oct. 22, so the room is already past its debut.

Seven Years In, the Same Menu

Carefree is where the business started. Venturini and his wife, Viola Tagliaferri, ran restaurants in Italy before moving their family to the United States in December 2018. With business partner Phil Igneri, they opened the first Pizzicata in Carefree on Sept. 28, 2019. Since then, The Foothills Focus reports, they have added Pizzicata locations in Mesa and Glendale and opened Pomodoro Italian Grill & Seafood in Cave Creek.

"Everything started at the Carefree location where I built this restaurant with my hands," Venturini told the paper. "After seven years, it was time to do a complete remodel."

The Carefree menu still covers a wide range, from casual to sit-down. It includes Roman-style pinsa such as the Margherita, Ligurian focaccia, panuozzi sandwiches and lobster ravioli. The restaurant's website lists daily hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Those hours make an early dinner easy, with a table at sunset and the drive back up the mountain soon after.

The Courtyard Around It

Pizzicata shares Spanish Village with a group of other businesses. Together they make the courtyard a place to spend an evening, with more than one stop.

Other places to eat and drink

The Historic Spanish Village dining directory lists Keeler's Neighborhood Steakhouse, Black Mountain Coffee & Cafe and Gears Lounge alongside Pizzicata. That covers a morning coffee, a steak dinner and a lounge for a drink afterward, all around the same courtyard.

Galleries

The village's gallery listings include Adelante Gallery, Grace Renee Gallery and Zuva Gallery. Shops in the directory include Andrew Z Diamonds, Desert Treasures and Hive Interior Design. With galleries and shops within a few steps, a walk before dinner fits easily into the evening.

The Daytime Calendar Centers on the Desert Gardens

Most of Carefree's dated events this season take place at one address, 101 Easy Street, home of the Carefree Desert Gardens. Spanish Village is close by. That makes it simple to plan a day around one event in the Gardens and end it with dinner in Spanish Village.

Date Event Where Source
Nov. 7–8, 2026 33rd Annual Fall Carefree Garden Art Experience Carefree Gardens, 101 Easy Street Thunderbird Artists
Fridays: Nov. 6, 13, 20, 27 Carefree Farmers Market, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion, 101 Easy Street Carefree Cave Creek Chamber
Fridays: Dec. 4, 11, 18, 25 Carefree Farmers Market, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion, 101 Easy Street Carefree Cave Creek Chamber
Thursday, Dec. 17, 2026 Carefree Art Night Carefree Chamber events calendar

The Garden Art Experience is the season's first big weekend. Thunderbird Artists bills it as the 33rd annual fall edition, held this year at Carefree Gardens. The farmers market is the steadier draw. The market operator lists hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from October through May and gives its address as 1 Sundial Circle. The December series even includes a Friday market on Christmas Day. Check with the organizer before planning a holiday morning around it.

Carefree Art Night on Thursday, Dec. 17 is the one evening event on the list. It is the night in this calendar best suited to a gallery walk followed by a table in Pizzicata's new dining room.

The Lights Are Going Up Under a New Arrangement

Visitors to the Desert Gardens in recent weeks may have seen colored flags tied to some of the trees and cacti. On Oct. 15, the Town of Carefree explained that the flags mark where Christmas lights will go.

This year the work is being done differently. At its October meeting, the Town Council approved hiring a local vendor to install and remove the Town's holiday lights and decorations. Until now, the Public Works Department did that work itself. The Town said the change frees staff for streets, drainage, traffic signs, public facilities and upkeep of the Desert Gardens. Installation is underway, and the Town Center's Easy Street string lights are being replaced at the same time.

The Town has not yet announced when the lights will be turned on. Easy Street will have new string lights this year. The Gardens' display goes up on the same blocks where the market and the art show run, a short walk from Spanish Village. Once the lights are on, the lit Gardens and Pizzicata's indoor room will be within walking distance of each other after dark.

Planning a Carefree Outing From Sunrise

Sunrise sits near the first nine holes of the Renegade course with easy access to Desert Mountain's front gate. That puts Carefree within easy reach for a morning or an evening. Here is how the season's dates line up:

  1. Nov. 7 or 8. Spend the afternoon at the Garden Art Experience at 101 Easy Street, then walk to Spanish Village. The Pizzicata courtyard suits an earlier meal, and the indoor room suits a later one.
  2. Any Friday in November or December. The farmers market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Black Mountain Coffee & Cafe is in the same courtyard as Pizzicata for coffee before or after. Pizzicata opens at 11 a.m. if the morning runs into lunch.
  3. Thursday, Dec. 17. Carefree Art Night, with Adelante, Grace Renee and Zuva galleries in Spanish Village, and dinner booked for the same evening.
  4. Once the lights are on. Walk Easy Street under the new string lights, then sit inside Pizzicata under the little lamps Venturini described.

Pizzicata serves until 9 p.m. daily, according to its website, so an evening in Carefree can start at sunset and still finish well before the Sunrise gate is quiet for the night.
